The exercises or movements we do in my classes are anti-aging. Let me explain.
I know the phrase anti-aging has been used by the beauty industry and I don’t love it. Aging is something not everyone gets to do and besides, it is inevitable. I think we should embrace the process and look for ways to make it great, but the phrase anti-aging is still a shortcut way to describe what we do in my classes.
One way to make your life much better as you age is to work towards moving your body in ways that allow freedom, pleasure and independence.
Since I am now – by any standards- old 🙂 I get it. I also see the aging process in others and what movements get harder along the way.
While we all have individual bodies, what happens as we get older is somewhat predictable.
We get slower, stiffer and more sedentary.
These are all things we can do something about.
After age 30 or so we will lose muscle mass unless we are doing resistance training. It is called sarcopenia and it results in frailty. Not only that, there are both slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers and guess which one we lose first? (hint- we don’t get faster as we age)
The good news is that we can build muscle (both types) at any age. It is literally never too late.
Lack of range of motion- commonly called flexibility- is important too. Being able to bend not break is a good thing. Yoga is great for this.
If we feel slow, stiff or in pain- we all know we don’t move as much. Being sedentary is a vicious cycle in that the less you do the less you want to do.
The classes I teach over zoom cover all the things that will ‘anti-age’ your body.
There is stretching, strength, cardio, stress relief, balance, brain health and functional mobility all covered during the week. All classes are recorded and can be accessed at any time that is convenient for you, or you can join us live – it is a great community.
