My dog’s full name is Bond. James Bond, but we just call him Bond.
Bond is 12 years old now and is still the most handsome Lab cross with a goatee and eyebrows. He has survived being hit by a truck and two surgeries but his health is failing now.
Here are the things I have learned recently from Bond.
1. Walks are one of the best things in life. Bond is pretty mellow most of the time but when I say ‘let’s go for a walk’ he is sooo excited. Walking in nature has saved my mental health many a time and Bond reminds me it is awesome.
2. Bond will wait for the good food. He does not waste his time on kibble but when I feed him the good stuff – he really enjoys his food! I buy and cook better things for both of us now.
3. Bond has become blind in the last month and while it has taken some adjustment he has not had much anxiety about it (I think). He just keeps going and his adaptability and resilience are inspiring. It is like those dogs that have three legs – they just adapt!
4. He follows me from room to room, loves to cuddle and likes to know he is a good dog. Bond wants some connection and kind attention. I mean – don’t we all?
5. Finally, Bond has taught me it is a big honor to be with someone who is at the end of life.
To care for and see off someone you love is both incredibly tough and deeply meaningful.Â
What have you learned from your pet? Let me know in the comments below.Â
We used to say to our son ” can you be more like the dog?” Then I thought wouldn’t the world be a nicer place if we were all more like the dog? Be excited for walks, everytime. Eat the good food. Be with your loved ones as much as you can; the journey is short for all of us.
Omgosh I love this!
Kathy I am sorry Bond has lost his sight and his health is failing. As you talk about the connection, following room to room, it reminds me that one of the main components of happiness is connection. When our pets are so happy to see us (and us them) and they stick their noses in our face and make eye contact – that is connection.
thanks Melanie. I agree with you about connection and happiness. I think it is one of the most important things for our overall health, to feel connected. xo
