I spent some time this summer in a spot I have gone to many times over the last 15 years, Nakusp BC.
When my kids were little, we spent a week or two with my brother’s family and sometimes my mom at a resort called Murphy’s Landing.
Nakusp is a small place that is sort of hard to get to (you have to take a ferry if you are coming through Revelstoke) and so it is a little quieter than some BC destinations.
We used to like that because we had the lake to ourselves!
I decided to spend some time away from home (COVID gave me cabin fever) and I wanted to go somewhere that felt familiar and that I could walk and hike and swim…
The first little while the smoke from fires was bad some days, as it was here in Calgary. The last half of my trip the weather got much better but the heat dome in June and the subsequent drought really took a toll on the landscape. The climate is changing rapidly and it is really devastating. We can’t ignore it!! ok rant over..
I really enjoyed the trip and here are three things I love about Nakusp.
1. Hot springs! There are many but I went to three during my stay.
The Nakusp Hot springs is lovely public facility that was at the bottom of my day long hike. The next day I was not sore at all, maybe because of my soak in the pools right after?
Halfway Hot springs is a hike to get to and is not a constructed pool but three natural dugouts right by the river with a couple of feet of water and sandy bottoms. I went with my daughter and her friend when they came to stay with me for a few days.
Halcyon Hot springs is the most upscale – no public entry, unless you buy a spa treatment. My pal Sharon and I both got a really good massage and access to the swanky hot pools overlooking the lake.
2. Hiking! Again, lots of choices but I went on a couple as well as walking to town everyday.
One was an easy short hike that took a bit to get to – The Cedar Grove trail. Old growth Western Cedar forest – magical!
Another hike was from the hot springs up to Kimbol lake. It was about 10 kms round trip and pretty steep in some spots!
Lots of walks around town are amazing – I was lucky enough to be able to walk beside the lake into town to get groceries and stuff.
3. Glamping. I love being out in nature but I also stayed in a comfortable cabin, was in walking distance to the best coffee and chocolate ever (seriously), went to a spa and had a tasting at a local winery.
I hope this coffee shop survives. The Cortado was my favorite!
This Chocolate shop has the best salted chocolate caramels I have ever tasted.
This local winery is really good as well. I brought home a rosé that I am saving for a special occasion!
So next to the good company of friends and family who came to visit – these were my favorite things this month!
