When both my grandmothers were in their later years, they started to lose their appetite. They became fond of tea and toast meals and they became more and more frail.

This unfortunately is quite common and it is the reason doctors sometimes recommend protein drinks like Ensure or similar.

I understand why but all I can say is…yuck.

While supplementation is unavoidable sometimes (I love a good whey protein shake after working out) I try to get my protein from whole food sources when possible.

I am not a nutrition expert but there is good evidence that we actually need more protein as we age.

So this month I am going to recommend three things I love to hit my protein goals.

The first one is a delicious yogurt called Skyr yogurt that is much higher in protein than regular yogurt.  It also contains calcium which we need for bone density.

The second is a type of granola (to go with my yogurt) that happens to have a good deal of plant based protein called Vector. Put some berries on top and you have a quick, breakfast with over 30 grams of protein.

Finally, this powered bone broth makes a nice afternoon snack instead of tea or coffee.  I also like to drink it at night before bed. Mix it with a little cool water first and then add hot water.

What are your favorite ways to get some protein into your diet? Any vegatarian suggestions?
