#2 Get ups.

Since number one was spending a little time on the floor it may not seem like rocket science that number two is getting back up. Get ups are a real exercise though and I love them as they are super functional. But there are as many ways to get up off the floor as there are ways to sit on the floor. One we do in class sometimes is the standing from kneeling position. This one surprises people with how unsteady they might be or with how weak the hip flexors have become. I have noticed as people age they have a harder time getting up from low chairs or sports cars and this only gets worse with time. The truth is that getting up and down from the toilet when you are old is one way to stay independent. Sorry for that unglamorous reality check 

Get up from kneeling

One of the best things about get ups is feeling confident. I have met so many people that are more and more sedentary because of the fear of falling. Part of that fear is the lack of confidence that they could get back up. Getting used to getting up and down from the floor is much more important than we think – especially as we age!
