“Grief expressed out loud for someone we have lost, or a country or home we have lost, is in itself the greatest praise we could ever give them. Grief is praise, because it is the natural way love honors what it misses.”  Martin Prechtel

This month I am recommending resources that have to do with death and grieving. It’s such a natural part of life and everyone will experience it at some point. I hope these resources are helpful.

1. I got some really great book recommendations from my super smart students. Here are three books I am going to read.

“The Year of Magical Thinking” by Joan Didion. This was recommended by a librarian and it is considered a classic. I think I will start with this as it is a memoir and I have not read Joan Didion before!

“Seven Choices” by Elizabeth Harper Neeld. I actually received this as a gift and have heard super good things from everyone who has read it.

“The Smell of Rain on Dust” by Martin Prechtel. I like this guy’s writing a lot. He is very poetic and this book comes highly recommended.

2.  Sarah Kerr – Death Doula. Sarah was a wealth of information, resources and comfort during my mother’s passing. Read about the ceremony we collaborated on here.

3. Tara Brach – Tara is an amazing buddhist teacher I like. Here is a video about grief and loss. I found the poems I read at my mom’s funeral through watching this video.

Do you have any resources you have relied on to help you through grief? Let me know in the comments below.
