I have got three favorite books to share with you right now, none of them are newly published but they are all important to me in different ways and I highly recommend them!

Awakening the Spine by Vanda Scaravelli

Sometimes people ask me for a recommendation of a good yoga book and I always have a hard time answering. What are they hoping to get out of it? I usually suggest going to the library and browsing through all the hundreds of yoga books available.

This book though often comes off my own shelf lately (i wrote about it here) because of the beauty and the poetry with which she writes about the body and yoga. The pictures are gorgeous and although there are yoga poses pictured at the back – the real gems are the essays about movement and life. Vanda Scaravelli was an amazing Italian yoga teacher and musician and the pictures of her doing the yoga poses at an advanced age are stunning.

Daring Greatly by Brene Brown

It is no exaggeration to say this book has been life changing for me. I love to challenge myself on the yoga mat but it is in the arena of daily life – parenting, relationships and work – that the stakes are highest and the challenges the greatest. Midlife can be an important time to choose to keep growing as a person. This book is about living wholeheartedly. It is about vulnerability. It is about digging deep and looking at the shame the holds us back. It is an act of courage to even read this book. But I recommend you do it.

If you don’t know Brene Brown – this 20 minute you tube video of her talk went viral and has been viewed  28,714,498 times.

Me talk Pretty one Day by David Sedaris

I have given away my copy (if you have it let me know!) but this is one of the funniest books ever. Sometimes you need a little laughter and levity right?

David Sedaris is an American writer of humorous essays and books. The first part of this book is about his family and is both laugh out loud funny and very touching. The second part is stories about him moving to France and learning the language. He observes his language skills progress  “from speaking like an evil baby to speaking like a hillbilly. ‘Is thems the thoughts of cows?’ I’d ask the butcher, pointing to the calves’ brains displayed in the front window.”.
